Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910 in Redding, Connecticut of angina pectoris. Upon hearing of Twain's death, President Taft said, "Mark Twain gave pleasure--real intellectural enjoyment--to millions, and his works will continue to give such pleasure to millions yet to come... His humor was American, but he was nearly as much appreciated by Englishmen and people of other countries as by his own countrymen. He has made an enduring part of American literature."
Mark Twain married Miss Olivia L. Langdon (1845-1904) from Elmira, New York in 1870. Olivia died on June 7, 1904.
Below photos are of the Ritz Carriage House, 359 Church Street Historic Elmira, NY. The tragic fire has caused the carriage house to be razed. Hopefully this will aid in saving the fait of the front Second Empire Style circa 1870 High Victorian Home.

These building are not connected to Elmira's
Business Civic Historic Districts on the National Register of Historic Places like the Historic Near Westside Neighborhood. But it does anchor more historic structures in the City of Elmira NY. However there is no hope for the Elmira Armory. This will be the new location for the Elmira Police Station. Count on it.
The Elmira Civic Historic District is most significant because of the cohesiveness of a wide variety of design styles and a high degree of design integrity. All of the major styles of 19th and 20th century architecture are represented. http://nyslandmarks.com/southerntier/elmhd1.htm
As reported in the Buffalo Courier, 1861: "In Elmira, there rises in beauty and grandeur one of the most magnificent edifices in the State. It will reflect honor on the Elmirane, the county and its architect and builder. With lofty tower it looks as majestic as those castles when barons of old issued forth in defence of injured lady love. We allude to the new Court House; H.N. White architect, and David Wilcox builder." The four county office buildings in the Courthouse Complex were erected over a period of sixty-three years. They are indicative of the county's development and are an important urban grouping of governmental buildings. The central structure, the courthouse, is an important example of the work of architect Horatio Nelson White, who designed several other courthouses in New York State. http://nyslandmarks.com/southerntier/elmcourt.htm
The Chemung Canal Bank Building is the oldest existing commercial structure in Elmira. Since its construction in 1833 the building has housed some noteworthy tenants, including Bank President John Arnot (1789-1873), and Elmira's first mayor and New York State Governor, David Hill (1843-1910).

The Elmira Near Westside Historic District is a cohesive residential area with small commercial buildings and several churches. Occupying 25-30 blocks, it holds the largest concentration of Victorian homes in the country and the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century homes in New York State. Half of the sidewalks are still slate slabs, many properties have road front lawns.
