     This site contains over 450 pictures of Elmira, New York's nationally registered historic district. Known as the Near Westside Neighborhood. Also in this site are many photos of Elmira and her architectural heritage. Useful area links, stained glass windows. Most of all - Elmira was summer home for 19 years of "Mark Twain" Samuel Clemens. His wife, Olivia Langdon Clemens, is from a prominent and wealthy Elmira High Victorian family. Only known film of Mark Twain watch video by Thomas Edison.

About the national historic district . . . 

After 478 properties were surveyed, the Near Westside Neighborhood Association Incorporated submitted all the data to the New York State Division for Historic Preservation for preliminary approval.

Upon New York State’s approval, the entire package was submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior for Federal historic designation.

The concept of a Historic District for the entire Near Westside Neighborhood was first conceived in 1978.

 

After a period of more than 5 years, this concept became a reality. The U.S. Department of the Interior listed the Near Westside Neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District, on December 22, 1983.
